What is a RON?

As a remote online notary (RON) in Washington State, you are authorized to legally witness and attest to the signing of documents remotely through audio-visual technology. Your responsibilities include:

Verify the identity of the signer: Before notarizing a document, you must verify the identity of the signer through a secure and approved method such as government-issued ID or a secure knowledge-based authentication (KBA) process.

Witness the signing of the document: You must witness the signing of the document through audio-visual technology and confirm that the signer is the person they claim to be and that they signed the document voluntarily.

Affix an electronic seal: After witnessing the signing of the document, you must affix an electronic seal on the document, which serves as proof that you have notarized the document.

Maintain records: You must maintain records of all documents notarized and make them available for inspection upon request of the Secretary of State

Continual Education: You are required to complete a minimum of 4 hours of continuing education every 2 years

It is important to note that RON notaries in Washington State must comply with all state laws and regulations regarding notarization, as well as any additional requirements set by the Secretary of State or other government agencies.
